McDowall is located 9km north of Brisbane’s CBD and has a population of approximately 6,850 people. McDowall is well-known for the Raven Street Reserve, which is a 24.3 hectare bush land area bordered by urban housing and busy roads.

The reserve is part of an extended section of forest and green area which also runs along Downfall Creek out to Nudgee Creek and the coastal mangroves. Bird life is plentiful and in keeping with its name has a large raven population.

McDowall’s original housing establishments were built through the 1970s with very few houses in McDowall built before then. In the 1980’s and early 1990’s, more housing was developed.

McDowall also has a large defense housing community which was established during the early 21st century. Many of the roads in McDowall are named after local and international film & television celebrities. Neighbouring suburbs to McDowall include Arana Hills, Everton Hills, Everton Park, Chermside West and Bridgeman Downs.

Located within close proximity to all of McDowall’s residential developments are two community-based shopping centres. McDowall Village shopping centre is located on the northern end of McDowall including an IGA supermarket.

The North-West Plaza is located on the southern end of McDowall which includes Woolworths supermarket. Brookside Shopping Centre, Stafford City Shopping Centre and Westfield Chermside are also conveniently located in neighbouring suburbs.

Bus services are your best public transport option and run between local shopping precincts, schools and the city.

Interestingly, McDowall State School, which opened in January 1975, was named before the suburb itself. The school was named in honour of Colonel John McDowall.

He was a distinguished early settler of the area. Brisbane City Council considered naming the suburb Annand, after Colonel Frederick Annand, but the residents were opposed and wanted the suburb to be named after the newly opened state school.

Other schools surrounding McDowall include Craigslea State High School, Northside Christian College, Prince of Peace Lutheran Primary and High School and McDowall Pre-school.
